Seven accused members of German far-left organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
