The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously flexible, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
