Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
